Indian representatives were re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the two-year term 2022-24. They committed to continuing their efforts to promote and preserve human rights through “Samman, Samvad, and Sahyog,” as they had done previously.
“India has been re-elected to the UNHRC for a sixth term (2022-24) with an overwhelming majority. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the members of the United Nations for placing their trust in India.
Using the hashtags #Samman #Samvad #Sahyog, India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations said it would continue to work to promote and protect human rights. “Samman #Samvad #Sahyog,” the mission said.
Other elected members
Argentina, Benin, Cameroon, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Montenegro, Paraguay, Qatar, Somalia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States were elected by secret ballot by the United Nations General Assembly.
As of January 2021, 119 of the 193 member states of the United Nations will have served as the Human Rights Council members. “This broad membership not only represents the diversity of the United Nations, but it also provides the Council with legitimacy when it speaks out against human rights violations in all countries,” the United Nations stated.
In 2018, the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, said that Washington’s election to the Council “fulfilled President Biden’s campaign vow to rejoin the Human Rights Council,” and that the United States will “fight to ensure that this organisation lives up to these values.”
