Assam Police seized 59 cattle heads

In a cattle smuggling case, police seized two cattle-loaded containers and detained two people in Assam’s Biswanath district.
Despite the implementation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, cattle smuggling is rampant in the state. In a cattle smuggling case, police seized two cattle-loaded containers and detained two people in Assam’s Biswanath district.
The Biswanath district police had set up a Naka checking point in Biswanath town based on secret information and intercepted two containers. Fifty-nine cattle heads were discovered during the search by the police team.
According to a Biswanath district police officer, the containers came from the Lakhimpur side.
“We received information that two containers illegally transporting cattle heads were arriving from Lakhimpur, so we set up a Naka check and stopped the vehicles bearing the registration numbers HR-38R-7855 and HR-38Q-9812.” “We discovered 59 cattle heads during our search,” the officer said.
“Police detained two people, identified as Ashraful Islam and Vikash Kumar,” he said.
According to the police officer, the accused could also not produce legal documentation for the cattle heads.
In July of this year, the Assam Assembly passed the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021. The bill was signed into law in September.
The new law included provisions for regulating cattle slaughter, consumption, and transportation in the state.
“No one shall transport or offer to transport any cattle from one location to another, including other states or any location within the state.” This act makes it a crime to slaughter animals. The competent authority may issue a permit for the transportation of cattle for legitimate agricultural or animal husbandry purposes, as specified in the rules enacted under this act. “The cattle shall be transported in accordance with the Central Government rules governing cattle transport under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960,” states the act.
