The Union Cabinet made many efforts to increase edible oil output and reduce reliance on imports. It has approved establishing a new Mission on Oil Palm, to be named the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP). It would be a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme with a particular emphasis on the North East area and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
About National Mission on Edible Oils:
The National Mission on Edible Oils is a government-funded initiative. The central government’s portion of the total outlay of Rs 11,040 crores is Rs 8,844 crores. The states will split Rs 2,196 crores. The “National Food Security Mission-Oil Palm Program” will be absorbed into this scheme. It was launched as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The decision was made following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of the new Central programme on August 15
This approval was granted to stimulate domestic oil palm cultivation for the next five years.
It will aid in lowering India’s reliance on imports.
Aims of the ” Edible Oils National Mission ” mission:
Given that 98 percent of crude palm oil (CPO) is imported, the new initiative intends to expand coverage to 10 lakh hectares by FY26 from the current 3.7 lakh hectares. By FY26, CPO output is predicted to reach 11.20 lakh tonnes, and by FY30, it will reach 28 lakh tonnes. The centre would provide $8,844 crore to the new centrally sponsored scheme, while states must contribute $2,196 crore, including viability gap money.
Significance of ” Edible Oils National Mission “:
To meet domestic demand, India is currently heavily reliant on imports of edible oils. As a result, they must take steps to increase their domestic production. It is critical to expanding the area and productivity of oil palm to enhance production. The mission can help achieve this goal of developing the site. The initiative will significantly assist oil palm producers by increasing capital investment, creating jobs, reducing import dependency, and increasing farmers’ income,” says the government.
