Several passengers were stranded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport for hours. Germany’s Lufthansa airlines cancelled 800 flights amid a strike by their pilots. Lufthansa cancelled almost all flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich for Friday due to a pilots’ union strike. The strike, which was announced by the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) from 12:01 am to 11.59 pm on Friday. It had a massive impact on flight operations amidst the return of the main travel period at the end of the school holidays in Germany and other European countries. Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo departures at German airports were affected.

An estimated 130,000 passengers have been affected globally, in view of the upcoming weekend, the end of the holidays in some parts of Europe.

As per an airline spokesperson, Lufthansa had to cancel 800 flights at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for Friday; with single flights also cancelled on Thursday. LH 761 (Delhi to Frankfurt) having 300 passengers and scheduled departure at 2.50 AM and another Lufthansa flight LH 763 (Delhi to Munich) having 400 passengers and scheduled departure at 1.10 AM were cancelled.

Both the flights were cancelled by the Lufthansa headquarters due to a one-day worldwide strike of all pilots of Lufthansa airline for appraisals. Security concerns had arisen at the Delhi airport last night due to the movement of Lufthansa passengers at the terminal building following the cancellation of a Lufthansa Airlines flight. In a viral video, passengers were seen shouting at the airport, asking for justice and a refund. Officials have pointed out that most of those supposed to travel by Lufthansa last night were students.
