On August 15, the tricolour is tied to the bottom of the flagstaff and hoisted up the pole to symbolise India’s rise as an independent country. However, you may have noticed that the flag is unfurled on Republic Day. It’s because by the time India declared itself a sovereign, democratic and a republic state on January 26, 1950, it was already an independent nation and the flag’s position at the top of the flagpole is indicative of that. The Flag Code of India 2002 states that a member of the public, a private organisation or an educational institution can hoist/display the National Flag on all days and occasions, as long as their conduct is consistent with the dignity and honour of the flag.
